eh, that's the eternal battle, isn't it?
Would you rather write a mediocre book that lots of people read or a great book that only 500 people read?
And to be honest, the reason the Dan Brown book took off was for the same reason Bridges of Madison County and The Celestine Prophecy did - people believe it's nonfiction. They think it's all real. Same thing with the Frey book - people were pissed when they learned it "wasn't all real." He couldn't sell it as fiction, cause it's really badly written. And most people really think the DaVinci Code, Celestine Prophecy, Bridges, etc. were "real" books, or at least "based on a true story."
I'd love it if people were reading a real history book and getting excited about it, but reading a badly-written fake-history book with a couple of historical therories in it and believing it's all true... ("'The Historian' is TOTALLY TRUE, DUDE!!) eh, eh, eh, that doesn't sit well with me.
I'd rather everybody got all excited about Jared Diamond's "Collapse" or "Guns, Germs, and Steel."
