Drugs & Depression

Depression, in our culture, is what tuberculosis was 100 years ago: illness that signifies refinement.

I was ready to hate that article, and it slowly won me over. I think there's a meaningful distinction to be made between the symptoms of depression (which are purely a disease, with no redeeming value) and the way in which a person reacts to that disease. Like any other great obstacle or difficulty, the act of fighting against the depression can yeild or force insight and a greater capacity for compassion which are indeed valuable.

I have to agree with Brendan. I really thought I was going to hate the article, but by the end I found myself nodding in agreement.

I describe myself as a pretty happy person. I mean, yeah, I have a temper, and I get passionate (pissed) about social injustice, but at the heart of it all, I'm a happy person. Who happens to struggle with depression. Which most people see as a contradiction in terms, but can't you have someone who is asthmatic but still healthy overall?

So my point is, I definitely liked how he made the very clear distinction between depression and the person's...um...personality.

Way to end on a strong note, there.
