Writing Challenge of the Day

How to make bit characters interesting who are loved and adored by your secondary character but who are going to get killed in about, oh, three chapters.

I mean, I know *he* likes them quite a lot, but, you know, *I* don't want to get attached, because then they'll try and figure out a way to live.

AND THEY MUST DIE.

THE PLOT DEMANDS IT.

I really gotta stick to this plot thing if I want this damn book done by October.

Dammit.

But if they aren't likable, no one will even care if they die.

Suffer for your art, dammit!

Great blog, by the way.

Hmm. How to make the reader attached, but not get too attached yourself, that's a tough one.

I have a slightly different death dilemma. I have two characters. Both must die, but they must die in a specific order. Except that character #1 thinks that ch#2 is an idiot and is currently refusing to die before him. Which is a problem.

I'd be tempted to flambe them both, but #2 is absolutely required for the stupid heroic stunt two chapters later. Which gets him killed.
